On 5th October 2015 it was announced by George Osbourne that he will extend shared parental leave and pay to working grandparents. The aim is to implement this by 2018 following a consultation in the first half of 2016.

According to the announcement evidence suggest that nearly 2 million grandparents have given up work, reduced their hours or have time off work to help families who cannot afford childcare costs. The new system will ensure greater flexibility for grandparents without losing their job. It will be interesting to see how this will work in practice…

The government considers that “The extension of shared parental leave and pay to working grandparents will ensure that hardworking families structure their lives in the way that works best for them.”
