Leukaemia misdiagnosis brings £175,000 payout

July 21, 2010

A middle-aged man who was rushed to hospital and misdiagnosed with leukaemia has been given £175,000 in compensation after being told he had less than a year to live.

Anthony Moore was initially diagnosed with MRSA by staff at Basildon Hospital. Medics then went on to claim he had severe leukaemia and should prepare himself for a swift and sudden death.

In reality, the 46-year-old former engineer had contracted nerve damage brought about by the drugs used for his MRSA treatment. Five days after being prescribed Linezolid, Mr Moore was dashed in front of doctors suffering from severe anaemia, swelling and low haemoglobin levels.

Due to the “prolonged and unmonitored” use of Linezolid, Mr Moore was in fact suffering from peripheral neuropathy. The effects of mistreatment left him with reoccurring nerve damage in his arms and legs, as well as nerve palsy in his left knee, leaving him unable to walk normally and in constant danger of falling over.

After the ailments cost him his job, and the prospect of possible amputations to his legs, Mr Moore challenged Basildon Hospital with the help of medical negligence solicitors.

“The claimant alleged negligence in prescribing Linezolid as he did not have MRSA and for failing to monitor blood results weekly in accordance with national guidelines,” said his solicitor.

Basildon Hospital accepted full liability for Mr Moore’s condition, awarding him a substantial out-of-court settlement. Afterwards, an unnamed friend claimed Mr Moore underwent “a terrible ordeal and just wants to put it all behind him”.

Such misdiagnoses can ruin the lives of loved ones and should not go unnoticed. If you’ve suffered as the result of clinical negligence, expert solicitors are here to see you get the compensation such tragic events deserve.
