Solicitors throughout England and Wales are reporting a noticeable increase in the amount of work-related claims over recent months, new figures have revealed.
Despite official figures showing that unemployment levels are beginning to decrease, several law firms have reported a 15% increase in the number of individuals seeking employment-related legal advice since July this year.
In comparison, June saw only a 1% increase in employment-related legal advice enquiries. Likewise, May figures were up just 3% on April. But the summer months have seen more disgruntled employees pursuing their employers for compensation and retribution.
"The sharp rise in employment-related legal enquiries in July is a shot across the bows to all UK employers, in both the public and private sector," one expert told the Guardian this week. "We all know about the economic and financial pressures facing Britain's companies, but the next chapter could be the legal issues facing them as more assertive employees look to take legal action."
40% of those enquiries filed were done so by already sacked employees who feel their job losses fell under unfair or constructive dismissal. One in five enquirers were already redundant before approaching solicitors.
"When you've just lost your job, you have nothing to lose in taking legal action against your employer," added Sarah Veale, Head of Equality and Employment Rights at the TUC.
If you feel your employer's actions during such turgid financial times have been disproportionate and unfair, approach our solicitors today and challenge for any compensation you may be entitled to.
