Pay discrimination cases ‘will increase’

June 07, 2011

Experts have predicted that employee grievances regarding pay discrimination could become more frequent unless salary increases are brought in line with rising living costs.

Frances O’Grady, Deputy General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), this week warned that the lingering effects of a global economic downturn, which halted the prevalence of wage hikes across all sectors, are still not being addressed.

As a result, Ms O’Grady claims that employers are running the risk of pay discrimination claims in the future if they do not bring current salaries in line with worsening inflation and interest rates.

Speaking following the publication of the Commission on Living Standards' 'Growth Without Gain?' report in May 27th, Ms O'Grady labelled its findings a "wake-up call" to the employment sector.

"As the UK seeks to recover from the downturn, we need a radical rethink of the way our economy is structured. Securing fairer wages for working people and strong jobs growth are essential to achieving a strong and sustainable recovery," she added.
