Tube driver wins battle for unfair dismissal payout

June 27, 2011

A former driver on London’s busy underground network has successfully challenged his ex-employers on the grounds of unfair dismissal.

Arwyn Thomas was sacked from his role with the London Underground (LU) following recent strike action. The strikes garnered nationwide publicity, much of it negative, and he felt that his employers relieved him of his duties due to his participation in the trade union activity.

His dismissal was immediately pounced upon by the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) Union, with General Secretary Bob Crow saying that LU's "intransigence" had left Mr Arwyn with "no choice" but to launch industrial action.

Mr Arwyn has since won his employment tribunal case against LU for undisclosed damages, while Mr Crow stated that the RMT is hoping the LU "sticks to its word" and reinstates the man, the Press Association reported.

And this week the RMT revealed that a fresh wave of industrial strike action has been pencilled in for the week beginning June 27th, as the union continues to battle proposed cuts to the LU’s workforce.
