Flexible working an antidote to discrimination

September 13, 2011

Organisations struggling with gender discrimination among their workforce should “embrace flexible working and greater levels of transparency”, a spokeswoman from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has claimed.

The EHRC believes the problem of inequality between males and females in workplaces can be combated by several measures, following reports in late August from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) which revealed that women in senior management positions are, on average, paid some £10,000 less per annum than their male counterparts.

According the EHRC official, the CMI figures are a clear indication that discrimination remains in the British employment sector, but there are "definitely practical things that businesses can do to make it easier for women to access those senior levels".

One of the solutions being floated by the EHRC is a drastic increase in flexible working practices. By allowing all workers the chance to fit their working schedule around busy personal lives, management can show recognition that both men and women have important responsibilities outside of the office.
