Companies commit to equality legislation

September 19, 2011

Leading organisations up and down the UK are fully committed to meeting voluntary equality targets, the Government has confirmed.

Think, Act, Report, a Government scheme designed to help enhance the level of transparency within the professional sector with regards to discrimination and inequality, was introduced earlier this year following a report from Lord Davies, which recommended that all FTSE 100 companies should have targets in terms of their female board representation.

And according to current figures, large companies such as BT and Tesco have embraced the programme. Over the coming months, they will in turn provide the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance with details of their internal practices and evidence of their equality targets.

Described as "positive step towards greater transparency", Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities, Theresa May, believes this honesty will help close the gender pay gap.

"Equality of opportunity is vital to building a strong, modern economy that can draw on the talents of everyone," she added.
