Liverpool Solicitor cleared of sexism against former employees

November 22, 2011

Liverpool solicitor, Captain Ibrahim Nadim, was vindicated today in a claim brought by former employee Kate Welch who had been dismissed from Nadim Associates for not attending a probation meeting. Claims made by Ms Welch included the allegation that Mr Nadim had said to her following a car accident that "you have all the traits of a blonde.” They also included sexual references he was alleged to have made to conveyancing solicitor Jenny Conroy involving the number 69.

Mr Nadim commented “it shows that employers should not give into malicious accusations. It was so outrageous - the comment about 1969 was that it was a significant date to me as that was when I came to the country and the year that Jenny was born.

'They twisted it to mean something else sexual, but it is not in my parlance if you put 69 in Arabic it doesn't even look the way it does here.”

He went on to say “I treat my people here as officers and gentlemen and I have the highest respect for everyone. I am an officer of the court as well as a solicitor. We have got the result that we expected, but it is a shame we have had to go through this. We have had so much support from law firms in Liverpool and we are very thankful for that. I had to defend my case as I wanted to clear my name.”

The Liverpool employment tribunal found that the claims were ‘opportunistic’. The Chairman added “ we find that the claimant's dignity was not infringed, rather she has gone to find ammunition to use against Capt Nadim because of her upset and indignation of being dismissed."
