A major NHS Trust is to pay more than £900,000 in compensation for the racial discrimination and unfair dismissal of a highly-paid former director.
Central Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust will pay a staggering £933,000 to former NHS Divisional Director Elliot Browne after his 34-year long career with the health service came to a dramatic end in 2008.
From 2007 onwards, Mr Browne was the victim of undocumented “discriminatory treatment”, an Employment Tribunal has ruled, after it discovered that his health was severely affected by his prejudice treatment at the hand of fellow colleagues.
“It is scandalous that this kind of behaviour and culture should exist in an organisation whose prime purpose is to care for others," said Mr Browne, whose union, Unite, has called for the trust ‘to tackle its culture of institutionalised racism’.
The Tribunal awarded Mr Browne, aged 55, whose health was ‘severely affected’ by his treatment in the workplace, a total of £933,115 for unfair dismissal, aggravated damages, and loss of earnings and pension. He had already received £71,415 from the trust.
